A disability can be a psychical or mental impairment or a combination of both. In order to be approved for benefits, your condition must be severe enough to prevent you from working in any regular paying job for at least 12 consecutive months or result in death.

The test for eligibility is whether you are physically and emotionally capable of performing a job that is generally available in the national economy.



If you are over 50, the Social Security Administration my give you special consideration. They will consider the difficulty of changing careers, based on age, education, work experience and the nature of your disability.
